Quepos

Since I arrived in Quepos mid morning, I decided I would take in some of the local sights in Quepos. It is so nice to be out of a big city, especially San Jose...it is certainly not on my top ten list of cities to see again. My hostel, the Wide Mouth Frog is right in the center of the town, where there is lots going on. Little restaurants, shops and several bars near by and I am also close to the supermarket and the bank. The banks in Costa Rica all have armed security guards at the door and be prepared to leave any bags you may have at the entrance, walk through a metal detector and have your belongings searched....just like going on a flight!!! Many bank machines are also in locked areas and you must line up outside on the street as each person uses the machine. As I was about to leave the hostel I met a couple from Quebec who had just arrived, so we decided to go for lunch at a traditional Costa Rican Soda. A traditional meal in Costa Rica consists of beans and rice....with EVERY meal!! My lunch turned out to be rice, beans, whipped potatoes, salad and a huge piece of chicken. The food is fairly bland, but none the less very good, and usually a good price...typically everything in Costa Rica is expensive. When I arrived at the hostel they gave you a little info booklet. It mentioned going to a waterfall not far from the Quepos, so the three of us decided to see what it was all about. This may not have been the best decision, as it was two o'clock in the afternoon, sunny, about 32 degrees and humid...but off we went anyway. The info guide said it was a 30 minute easy hike along a river. Well I am not sure what Costa Rican guidelines are for easy, but the trail was almost nonexistent and full of boulders, trees and tree roots. When I thought we must be off the trail and was about to give up, we finally found the waterfall...or I guess that is what you would call it. Since it had not rained much in Quepos lately, not only was the river mostly dried up, but so was the waterfall. Trust me, I could not even bring myself to take a picture of the pitiful thing!! Someone should really have mentioned this to us before we set out on our little adventure. Needless to say after our long, hot and mosquito filled trek, we were not awed by a rushing, beautiful waterfall.
After much disappointment we headed back along the river, caught the bus to our hostel and decided to have a swim....very nice and refreshing! Well that was enough adventure for me, so I had a bite to eat, took a cold shower..this is common in Costa Rica...and headed to bed. Before going to sleep however, I meet a US girl staying in my room who had just recently started travelling and was one month into a year long trip. We had a great chat and it really brought back memories from my trip around the world eight years ago....God that sounds like a long time ago, but certainly does not feel like it. Next destination Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio...and it was awesome!!! Until then...
